Cris Jacobs, Patrick McAvinue, Mike Munford

Cris Jacobs, Patrick McAvinue, Mike Munford

Normally fronting or supporting separate touring bands, three of Baltimore’s finest musicians, Cris Jacobs, Patrick McAvinue, and Mike Munford come together for a night of insanely good bluegrass and soulful singing.

Singer-songwriter Cris Jacobs has explored the outer realms of bluegrass, folk, funk, country, blues, soul, and rock with stylistic reverence and adventurous alchemy. “I’ve always just accepted and respected that evolution is part of the creative process,” the Baltimore, Maryland-based artist explains. “But I’ve made sure that throughout my work, I’ve always been honest. That’s the end goal, writing music that is meaningful to me.”

Cris Jacobs began his career fronting the acclaimed award-winning jam band The Bridge. When the band went on permanent hiatus, Cris continued to follow the music. In 2012, he issued his solo debut, Songs For Cats And Dogs, a masterful album featuring poignant songwriting, honey and whiskey soaked vocals, burly riffs, dazzling guitar playing, and bucolic pedal steel guitar. Jacobs’s solo career was welcomed by fans and media alike, widening his profile as he appeared on television and NPR’s Mountain Stage sessions. He was also personally invited by Stevie Winwood and Sturgill Simpson to join them on their national tours.

2013 International Bluegrass Music Association banjo player of the year, Mike Munford, grew up in Roland Park, and quickly became immersed in the hotbed of bluegrass in the Baltimore/DC region. He assimilated many of the best traits from the earlier generation of banjo evolutionists, and is now known, as the Baltimore Sun puts it, for “a fluid, near-hypnotic rhythm generated mostly from his thumb, index and middle fingers.”

Patrick McAvinue, 2015 International Bluegrass Music Association Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year, is regarded as one of the most innovative and driven young fiddlers in the industry, able to translate the traditions of Bluegrass into a fresh, eclectic, forward-thinking language of his own. Patrick’s CD release, Rutland’s Reel, is described as, “a roller coaster of pure uncut fiddle nirvana” (Joseph Scott, Country Music Pride). He is a regular on the Creative Alliance stage, dropping Stephane Grappelli licks into our Django jazz fest, or as part of his own killer group, Charm City Junction.
