Saxophonist, composer, educator, and advocate of the arts Elijah Jamal Balbed a Washington, DC native currently living in Queens, NY. At the age of 26, Elijah has performed with music legends from varying genres including Lalah Hathaway, the late Butch Warren, and most notably the Godfather of Go-Go music; the late, great Chuck Brown. He prides himself in being a versatile musician who is able to perform comfortably in many different musical contexts. Elijah has been named Best New Jazz Musician (2011) and Best Tenor Saxophonist (2013) by the Washington City Paper, as well as participated in residencies at Bohemian Caverns (2011, 2014), Strathmore (2013), the Kennedy Center (Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program, 2014), and most recently a 5-week stint at the Jazz at Lincoln Center in Doha, Qatar. He has two album credits as a leader, Checking In (2012) and Lessons From the Streets (2015), both named among the top jazz albums in DC by Capital Bop their respective years. The title track of "Checking In" made it to the final round of the International Songwriting Competition along with Omar Sosa (winner), Lionel Loueke, and Rene Marie. Elijah leads his own bands the EJB Trio, Quartet, and Quintet, as well as his Jazz/Go-Go outfit The JoGo Project.
