Max Baca y Los Texamaniacs

Max Baca y Los Texamaniacs

Champions of a well-cured, San Antonio sound, Max Baca y Los Texamaniacs continue the tradition of accordion-bajo sexto driven Tex/Mex dance bands that combine polka, rock en español and Texas blues. Theirs is as equally indebted to their family conjunto as it is to the bands they have shared the stage and recording studio with- Los Super Seven, The Texas Tornadoes, Los Lobos, and the Rolling Stones.

The quartet’s leader, Max Baca, is a legend on the bajo sexto, a twelve string guitar-like instrument, which customarily provides rhythm accompaniment for the button accordion and creates the core of the conjunto sound. On the bajo, Max does all that and much more, using the instrument to push the groups sound to another level of vibrancy altogether. His musical virtuosity and blistering guitar riff solo style is now being emulated by young bajo players internationally. By attracting young, new audiences, Max has been credited for making a traditional folk / roots/conjunto instrument hip again while maintaining his roots in traditional conjunto. His many sojourns as a life-long musician have resulted in an impressive international touring schedule, including four tours to Iraq, China, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Kosovo to entertain our troops. Max has appeared on national television programs, such as Conan O' Brien, David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Austin City Limits. Max has also been featured in several PBS documentaries: Songs of the Homeland, American Roots Music, and Latin Music USA and has participated on ten Grammy winning projects, including the double-platinum CD for the Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge (Virgin 96). In 2010, Los Texmaniacs earned a Grammy for their for Borders Y Bailes (Smithsonian Folkways) album.

The Stone Hill All-Stars, Baltimore’s legendary recording and dance band, is joined by members of Mambo Combo, The Polkats, and Rhumba Club. Baltimore’s City Paper says that All-Stars John Shock and Paul Margolis “have been at the helm of some of the best roots-rock bands in Baltimore.” Members of The Stone Hill All-Stars have backed up Greg Kihn, Sleepy LaBeef, Jorma Kaukonen, and many other regional and national acts. Join them for a blistering dance set as they share the bill with the great Max Baca and Los TexManiacs.
