Hot Club of Baltimore's "Django in Rome" features songs in the style of Django Reinhardt based on one of his most cherished recording sessions from 1949-50 in Rome. In this performance, bandleader Michael Joseph Harris offers an authentic interpretation of this later period of Django's playing. Infused with be-bop ideas, the music has the dynamic accompaniment of piano, tenor sax, upright bass, and drum set with brushes.

This is just the kind of original presentation fans have grown to expect from Harris. The guitarist and composer led the popular Latin jazz group Bossalingo before directing his talent to Gypsy Jazz. He leads tradition oriented Hot Club of Baltimore and related group Ultrafaux playing contemporary music in the same style. With new albums to share, the bands began touring the East Coast in May and will leap over to the Left Coast for more dates in July.

Since forming in 2012, Hot Club of Baltimore has played a steady stream of concerts earning abundant press. Says Tom Cole of Pacifica Radio’s WPFW, “These folks can handle the complexities and breakneck speeds of Roma swing.” WTMD’s Sam Sessa says, “This is music you didn’t know you were missing, and it’s wonderful to hear it anew.”

With the success of his two groups, Harris is bringing jazz manouche to a new generation of listeners. Look for upcoming performances at festivals such as Django by the Sea, The Midwest Gypsy Swing Festival, and the Harris led Charm City Django Jazz Festival.
