rELIcs gallery exhibition

JUNE 3 – JULY 15
OPENING JUNE 3, 6 – 10PM

EMP’s latest gallery exhibition features the works of Margo Elsayd, Melani Hekimoglu, Avery Gabbiano, Erick Antonio Benitez, and Ixto.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The language of light emits throughout space like a vehicle for concepts and emotions. When it interacts with the language of sound, the two phenomena combine to form a synergistic relationship. This synergy creates a portal into a space that encourages transcendence. ‘Relics’ explores this relationship through installations that utilize projections, industrial objects, and sonic apparatuses. The work can be experienced through surface level physicality, which is looking into the portal, as well as be a guide towards deeper dialogue, which is stepping through the portal. The pieces that comprise ‘Relics’ are steeped in ritual, and point towards the necessity of consciously creating portals as ritual.

The artists are all affliated with Woven Autonomo. A collective founded in late 2014 by Avery Gabbiano and Erick Antonio Benitez. They are a sonically focused collective based in Baltimore, MD, and have been involved with group exhibitions out of La Bodega Gallery. The first of these exhibitions, Oil on Oak, was a group project including a dialogue between live sound performance, ceramic artists, fiber artists, and painters. This exhibition coincided with the release of the Collective’s first recording of the same name. Woven Autonomo continues to install sound art, release music, engage in performance, and collaborate with an array of multidisciplinary artists.
